What shaped me

How did I go from a working class kid in the east end of Glasgow to a professional actor and director with a string of credits to my name? Here’s the short version.

I first fell in love with the transformational glamour of theatre at the tender age of 13, playing the Grandfather in my high school’s production of Oliver. My voice was breaking, I couldn’t sing a note, and without my glasses everything was a soft blur. I felt so alive.

From then on, with school shows, regional companies and amateur companies I took every chance I could to get on stage.

I studied theatre arts in Glasgow, and spend many a happy hour working with the talented team of The Drama Center at the Ramshorn.

Moving to Edinburgh I became active in my university’s drama society, both as actor and director, co-directing an evolved original work which was nominated for both a Fringe First and a new Scottish Writing award.

I expanded my performance experience in many varied directions. Creating huge open-air shows with 200 performers. Studying Butoh dance with Lindsay John. Working as a creepy chaotic clown compare in the cabaret collective The Big Red Door. Making mischief with mischief la bas.

I came to London to attend drama school, graduating at 39.

I founded The Canting Crew in 2013, and over the next 3 years directed 6 productions including Comedy: A Tragedy In One Act at Sadler’s Wells.

As an actor I have been fortunate to perform in theatres the length and breadth the country in everything from high farce to dramatic tragedy. In front of the camera I have acted in feature and short films, learning to knit for one role; a hobby I still love.

My journey through the performance arts has been wide and varied. Over the years I learned how craft leads to art. I experienced the moments an actor and an audience truly connect. I have had the joy of working together to make magic. The thrill and joy of our art, and all its aspects and elements drives and inspire me every day.
